The effects of globalization on culture
What are your thoughts about globalization and its effects on culture. Use specific examples from your local environment. Post a response along with a photo, image, cartoon or video. Please also respond to at least two other student posts.
Globalization has affected our local culture in many ways that aren’t transparent. This includes the food we eat, the music we listen to, and the clothes we wear. All of these everyday personal items come from imports and exports around the globe. For instance, simple fruits that we take for granted, such as oranges could come from Florida. Even if you look around 17th avenue, there are many restaurants originating from different ethnicities. Check the tag on your shirt; chances are that it’s made in China or some other Eastern Asian country. These are just a few examples of how globalization has shaped our local community today. In terms of culture, I believe that Calgary has very diverse religious and cultural views. This reflects a cultural mosaic, where many various views interact to make our community stronger.
ReplyDeleteI strongly support this point of view because I feel that Globalization brings countries together and makes the rely on each other. I think that a diverse point of view makes for a better Nation than just one ethnocentric point of view.
DeleteAriba Bajwa
DeleteI also agree with this perspective, because I think that globalization makes countries rely on one and other. Also they start coming togather and depending on each other for ideas and resources. It brings the world together.
P.S.- I love the Red Hot Chilli Peppers Logo
I like how you gave evidence to support your facts, an example of this was when you explained how people take simple things such as oranges for granted. You provided evidence for this by saying that through globalization, Florida is able to export oranges all the way to Calgary.
DeleteI completely agree with you, in calgary we have a lot of trade (oil and gas) so people come from all over because of this giant export.
DeleteYour statement certainly depicts the effects of globalization really well. The fact that globalization is affecting us in less transparent ways is very true. I really liked how you used the term 'cultural mosaic' to enforce the significance of diverse religious and cultural views.
DeleteMy perspective on globalization’s effects on culture are positive, this is because due to the interaction of many cultures places, like Canada, are incredibly diverse and contain much knowledge. Canada is a very prosperous country, and our education is considered really good. For example Canada earns a “A” grade on the Education and Skills report card, it is ranked second behind Finland. I believe Canada is very knowledgeable because of how many different cultures have contributed to that knowledge. There are about 200 languages that have a million or more native speakers. In Canada we have two bilingual languages and contain many cultural festivals, like Multiculturalism Day on June 27. Thus globalization has immensely affected our local culture here in Canada.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your prespective because all these ideas and knowledge are brought together from different cultures. It's very interesting to know that Canada has such high rankings and that we are known for our national multiculturism.
DeleteI completely agree, i also feel that gobalization helped so many different cultures prosper and grow. This, like you stated in a way, lead to and expansion in the countries, cultures, and their knowledge and understanding of the world, and also influenced a lot of change within these cultures.
DeleteGlobalization in Canada has given it a very diverse spectrum of goods to be able to choose from, have and use, especially in the food industry. This means that we have a big variety of different foods available to us to consume. Globalization means to make Countries more interdependent and interconnected with each other. Because Canada has so many diverse cultures and nationalities, transnational companies in the food industry set up their franchises all over the world, including Canada. This accommodates and helps many immigrants here because a part of their culture, food, can be found.
ReplyDeleteLink to Picture- http://cibocalgary.com/
This is an Italian restaurant that can be found right here in Calgary Canada.
I agree Mr. Sanchez, with the transnational companies immigrants have a easy migration over as they still have access to thneir custom foods. At the same time they can slowly change and adapt to our culture and lifestyle. Except I think Canada lacks the amount of cultural support to other nations. The food industry is strong with different cultures but the clothing, housing and language is weak.
DeleteI agree with your statement as the food industry in Canada is very diverse. We can go almost about anywhere and get food from different ethnicities. This probably isn't true for a lot of developing countries. If you were to go there, you'd probably only find dishes originating from that country.
DeleteI believe Globalization has brought advanced Economic and Social benefits to Canada. Foreign companies have migrated into Canada and brought new foods, products and technologies in which all boost our economy. Through the variety of people and nationalities our cultures can take bits and pieces to create an all-around high quality life style. We are able to better understand world events and work together to solve these problems and prosper as a whole. For example UNICEF is a company where multiple nations work together to help with world disasters and re build a Global Market. I feel Globalization is the back bone to world change and prosperity.

I think we can recognize that the globalization that occurred back during the age of imperialism has dramatically changed compared to today's globalization. The face of globalization today is more based on building connections and working with each other. This idea is to bring all cultures and have them work and prosper together. Unlike the past, we no longer try to assimilate cultures, values or beliefs but include and accept them for what they are.
DeleteGlobalization has a major impact on my home country as it has influenced India significantly as I saw 2 years ago. Cheap labour and outsourcing has led many of the world’s biggest companies to come to India such as HP. For example, when I was in Bangladesh, I met people that worked at companies answering calls from America. This has a major effect as many Indians are starting to learn English over their native language. Since many Western companies have gone to India, many Indians are being adapted to western culture. For example, many people I saw are starting to eat at McDonalds and starting to buy Adidas clothing which is very western. Due to globalization, in my local community, I can buy some of my favourite Indian products such as rasmali( an Indian sweet) at stores such as Superstore and Walmart with many of those products even coming from India.
ReplyDeletehttp://knowledgenetwork.thunderbird.edu/research/files/2010/12/mcdonalds-india.jpg
I agree with you, globalization also gives
Deleteimmigrants the ability to buy certain products in their new country that were originally manufactued in their mother country.
I think it was a good idea for your to reserach how globalization has impacted yoru home country! Even though I think globalization has a huge beneficial impact, your response shows how it can have a negative impact. Your response shows that even though people are learning different things from other cutlures it seems like their own culture is being lost. However, it looks like many things from your home country are being brought to other places, so that's awesome. :)
DeleteI like how you explained the impact of globalization in your home country. I agree with you, due to globalization, we have been able to access material from all around the world. I believe globalization is beneficial to the world economy, but at the same time I agree with Emiola, people may be westernizing too much which would result in a culture being lost.
DeleteI also agree with what you are saying. I believe that globalization has had a large impact on countries such as India. I enjoyed how you used your home country as an example because it allows a greater understanding of this issue and how it can affect so many. However I also agree with Emiola, because if westernization starts replacing a countries unique culture then it can also be negative.
DeleteI agree with Emiola. Based on your response, it seems to me that globalization is a bit of a two-way path. On one hand, many people are becoming too westernized and may be forgetting about their own culture. However, it is because of globalization that we are able to still experience and connect with our own culture even in another country.
DeleteI agree with you as i have noticed these changes as well and by the way, rasmali is my favorite too :D

ReplyDeleteGlobalization has a great influence on cultures all over the world. Cultures will get many different ideas, rituals, strategies, new technology, food etc.. from foreign countries, that contribute to their own culture. Having this multicultural contact is very valuable because it’s one of the only ways of reuniting countries which gives the world much more variety in culture, and will help us conquer worldwide problems together. An example would be the restaurant Thai Thai on 17th ave, This restaurant is providing Canada with a taste of a their own culture by opening up a restaurant in Canada.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.bing.com/images/search?q=thai+thai+restaurant&view=detail&id=155994A42D1584CEA79CD3F05C1705D031F02557
I agree with this opinion, exchange of technology and ideas are very important in development of a nation. Countries all over the world should be more united as one rather than individuals. This will benefit each individual in different ways.
DeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
DeleteI like that you not only explained the positive effects of globalization, but you also explained the ways that globalization positively effects culture.
DeleteIn my opinion, globalization has brought new knowledge to many cultures and introduced people to things they would never have experienced. Among this knowledge has been new medical procedures that have saved lives and ways to preserve history. One such example is with the muslims during the crusades era, where the Christians were using primitive ways to heal wounds, while the Muslims were already using advanced methods of medicine like cauterizing severed limbs. Events similar to this, or just general cultural contacts like the spreading of Coca-Cola across the world, are good for the world's societies. A few inventions that globalization has spread throughout the world is the internet, the automobile and the telephone, all of which the human race couldn't even imagine living without for more than a month. Because of these inventions, as well as ideas and procedures, that have spread throughout the world thanks to globalization, I think that globalization is very important to Humanity and we all take it for granted.
ReplyDeleteSpreading Coca-Cola across the world......
DeleteI agree with what you're saying. It's a bit similar to the movie we watched about the conquering of the Inca civilization. Due to the location of the European countries, they were able to acquire knowledge from many places all over Asia, and due to the spread of new knowledge, they were able to advance their own technology and create new devices and objects, pushing them higher in terms of progression.
I agree, but there is still more knowledge we could share for the global economy to prosper. As well there is knowledge some cultures and societies don't want others to have, such as the Americans do not want nuclear energy to be shared worldwide. I think it will forever be a conflict because information will leak to some and the others will be behind/agree as they aren't up to par with the others.
DeleteOne of the most obvious affects of globalization is the spread of culture, especially western culture. However, it is not only western culture that is being spread; places such as Canada allows us to experience different parts of the world in our very own country. There's nothing wrong with embracing other cultures, and just because we may enjoy another culture, doesn't mean that we will forget our own. I believe that being exposed to a vast variety of different people and their ways of life enables us to open up and reduce prejudice.
ReplyDeletei agree, accpeting new culture will benifit us in variety of ways. We have access to other cultures easily, for example, Japanese Pocky sticks.
DeleteI support this person's opinion because I believe that interacting with different culture groups in our society will open up our mind. Globalization create diversed societies like Canada, which enable us to encounter with different cultures and learn from them.
DeleteI agree! Accepting other cultures while still maintaining our own is a great benefit. We can enjoy things from out country while learning from another. It lessens discrimination because countries are mutually sharing things from their own cultures!
DeleteGlobalization created a more diversed and multi-culture society in Canada, where people with different cultures can transfer their knowledge and ideas with eachother. Also, we can now buy products from other countries like exotic fruits, and cloths that are manufactured in Mexico or india. Immigrants that moved to Canada can still maintain their identity because there are shopping centers like china town that are dedicated to certain cultural groups. This resulted a positive effect on culture because peoples are more open minded toward different cultures now.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with your pespective on globalization! Globalization has made Canada more multicultural. I didn't occur to me the different types of food we have in Canada due to globalization!
DeleteI agree because people experience different cultures everyday in Canada. In Canada, people eat food from other countries and use products imported from foreign countries on daily basis.
DeleteMy perspective on globalization is quite similar to yours. I especially agree with your last point about people being more open-minded because globalization lead to multiculturalism
DeleteI think globalization is a good thing. it allows for people to be more enlightened about the world and be less narrowminded about aspects of different cultures. An example of cultural revitalization around calgary could be the calgary chinese cultural centre. The goal of this organization it to promote chinese culture in to main stream society. An other example of cultural revitalization that could be seen around calgary could be the calgary theatre project. this organization promotes a wide range of preforming arts and incorporates cultures from all over the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URHUBuA9zKc
ReplyDelete-Georgia
I agree that globalization helps individuals see other points of views. I think that when people are less narrowminded they can view the world in different ways, and this is all thanks to globalization.

ReplyDeleteGlobalization impacts each individual in this world. Technology, religion, and other things spread all over the globe and individuals become more interdependant. Some countries like India are impacted majorly by globalization. When the British came to India all these ideas and perspectives bounced around and changed. Now India is a more upgraded country. On the other hand they did get many things tooken away and reduced, for example tradition. Many cultures are effected by globaliation in posotive and negative ways.

I agree with your point of view, globalization has both positive and negative effects on our world.
DeleteI agree with your perspective on globalization, as you had mentioned, globalization had impacted many cultures in both positive and negative ways. now, people can adapt the new technologies and experience other cultures by eating their food, but it can lead to loss of culture . One example is when people start wearing more westernalized clothing and stop wearing their traditional clothes
DeleteI feel that, what you said is true. Gobalization had it's negative and positives, and even though these countries gained something other things were taken away from them. in a lot of instances like you stated they were stripped of traditions, and aspects of their ways of lifes were taken away.
DeleteI strongly agree with your perspective. Globalization affects various aspects in ways that can be negative as well as positive. I think globalization creates many cross cultural contacts that may lead to acculturation which is positive or assimilation which is negative.
DeleteI strongly agree with your perspective. I believe that globalization can be very benificial, but at the same time if it spreads too fast it can lead to a loss of culture due to the growing demand for new ideas and ways of life. This is instead of trying to preserve the culturally diverse countries that are already there. Through globalization countries have definately been able to advance and constantly learn from others to work to become better in the culture and way of life.
DeleteI believe that the globalization had brought many positive impacts on our society. Globalization has positive benefits on economy of Canada, as transnational countries introduced new technologies, foods and products to Canadians. Also, globalization had made interaction between countries possible. Canada is a multicultural country, in which people with many different cultures and speaks different languages live in harmony. The different cultures in Canada allow people to experience other cultures. For example, people eat food from other countries, listen to foreign music, watching movies filmed or produced in other places in the world, such as Holly woods, and using items imported from other countries in our daily basis. When visiting a food court in a mall in Canada, many of restaurants in there sell foods from other countries, such as China court, which sells Chinese food and Taco Time, selling Mexican food.

I agree with you. Globalization enabled us to accept and interact with different cultures, it also beneffited the economy because countries can now trade with eachother.
DeleteI like the way you address the positive impacts of globalization on Canada and I agree with all the ones you listed. I agree with you on how in Canada, we can enjoy all types of food from different cultures. I love living in Canada because I'm around so many cultures and that is something not many countries get to enjoy.
DeleteGlobalization unite the world as a whole, people all over the world have easy access to other cultures' food, music, clothing etc. People now have a open mind to new ideas and technologies, which was brought by globalization. Products from forgein countries can be purchased easily at shopping centers such as Superstore, Walmart and Costco. Canada is a diversed country, there are lots of people with different cultures and backgrounds. Food is one of the most influenced industry in Canada, restaurants like Thai Thai and Opa are common on the streets.
ReplyDeleteYou're right! I love how we can experience foods and products from all over the world. Also, new technology that is shared from other countries lets us make our country better, and vise versa.
DeleteI agree with you. I think that globalization has increased our range of choices specially when it comes to food, music and clothing.

ReplyDeletei liked how you adressed the pros and cons of globaliazation
DeleteI believe that globalization has positive and negative impacts. The process of globalization got people closer to each other and made our world more inter-connected through technology. However, a lot of times globalization results into cultural loss. For instance, our society is a very multi-cultural society but that's going away as many non-canadians that have been living here for a longer time are begining to lose their culture and are adopting the Canadian culture. There are efforts made to maintain that cultural diversity by provinding people with their cultural food, traditional items and giving them the freedom to practice their own religion and cultural activities. This picture of a temple in Calgary is a great example of cultural diversity in our society.

I like the way you address the pros and cons of globalization. I agree with you as I believe that globalization has lead us to become more interconnected. I also agree with you on how Western culture is taking over and many cultures are adapting to it resulting in losing their native culture.
ReplyDeleteGlobalization has great influence over many aspects of society and it affects many aspects of global culture. It affects the way that society works and how connected the world is. Through globalization, the world has become very interconnected and people are slowly starting to adapt to modern culture. Different parts of society are starting to have an increased amount of influence over other parts of society and this has brought both positive and negative change. It has helped undeveloped countries modernize but it has also affected local culture. Globalization has caused the lives of many people to suddenly change into a western life style and because of this local culture is being lost. Even though globalization has caused cultural loss, it has also helped raise the standard of living in many of those place. Through globalization, developed countries like Canada, have also benefited. Globalization has enabled people from different countries to immigrate to developed countries which has increased the multicultural level of these developed countries.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. I think, everything has its pros and cons and globalization has a lot more pros than its cons, so it's a beneficial process generally. In my opinion as well, globalization has raised our standard of living and has been mostly positive for the world.
DeleteI believe that globalization has a good effect on culture. It allows people to open their minds about people, countries, cultures and each one of our differences. It also lets people enjoy what’s unique in a different country. For example, food, language, music, and more. Because of globalization, we build many new friendships with people in school, work, and in many other public places. This way we can learn more about their culture and who they are as a person. Globalization is a way to minimize discrimination between people that look different from ourselves.

DeleteGlobalization affects many different aspects of an individual’s life and a society as a whole. We live in Canada, yet we wear clothes made in China, we eat food that comes from Mexico, these are all examples of Globalization. Globalization has affected the aspects of our lives and local culture positively and well as negatively. Due to globalization of trade markets, resources, and economy, there has been a lot of improvement in global prosperity. At the same time, Westernization as well as domination of English language is harmful to other cultures and may lead to people being assimilated by the western culture. This may lead to extinction of different culture.
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement completely. I like the examples that you used.
DeleteI agree with this statement, sometimes though we don't even realize how much globalization effects our lives.
DeleteI agree, globalization has a lot of pros and cons
DeleteI personally believe that globalization has had a positive effect on culture. This is because it allows countries to adopt ideas and cultural aspects and countries can constantly strive to become more culturally advanced. Countries are able to grow together and become more connected, while at the same time also become more interdependent. Globalization has allowed us the opportunity to experience different foods clothing and cultural aspects of other countries. Many of the products we buy are from many different places around the world, meaning that we are able to learn and adapt parts of different cultures into our own. As a country we are able to take aspects from different cultures and add them to ours and this allows us to be as culturally diverse as we are. Although, I also believe that if globalization happens too fast it can lead to a loss of culture due to the growing demand for new products from International corporations, taking away from culturally rich local businesses.

I believe that globalization has had a positive effect on cultures. I believe this because when I walk down 17th avenue, I see that there are many different restaurants that come from many different cultures. Globalization allows for individuals to explore outside their own culture and to gain knowledge. Globalization grants us the privilege of trying new foods and clothing from different cultures. I believe that globalization has culturally diversified Calgary and has improved everyone’s quality of life.

I agree with this statement, I like how you said that globalization grants us privileges to try new things.
DeleteI believe that globalization has a positive effect on cultures and society, without globalization we would not be able to interact with people around the world like we do today, and we wouldn't be able to communicate as easily. Globalization makes things easy for us like trade and partnership.

That is absolutely true. Another thing that has been important for globalization is the internet. An example is the thing we are doing. Without the internet this connection between our classes would not be possible.
DeleteHey guys. We couldn't make our own account so we just write a comment here.
ReplyDeleteIt seems like all of you think that globalization has a positive influence on your society - we agree. As you say, we learn from each other in many different ways. It is a good way for a country to develop. The connection between countries leads to influences both in human ways and in material ways. For example things like hospitality, knowledge, different values and so on, and things like food, clothes, stores and all that stuff. For that reason we think that globalization affects countries in a very positive way.
But we do also think that it brings up some negative things because it makes many discussions and disagreements. In Denmark there is a lot of people who for example don't like the immigrants because they do not think that they try enough to fit in to our culture. This is leading to strongly dislike between these two parts. So in this situation the globalization has an negative impact.
Generally, we think that globalization works well but some cases need improvements.
Love from Siri and Anne Sofie, DK
I agree with you girls.
DeleteGlobalization has a positive influence on many things in the world. Personally I think that its a good thing that cultures and the connection between the countries has developed a lot through the past couple of years.
And I think that it is a bad thing when people in Denmark dislike immigrants, becauce it would good for the Danish culture to have some different cultures to have an influence on our own culture.
Love from Monica, DK
As far as i can see, most of these comments talk about all the positive things about globalization. I agree in most of the things mentioned, but we also have to remember that it is not all perfect.
ReplyDeleteOutsourcing is one of the problems that is seen in connection with globalization. When the big companies choose to send their production to countries with safety and environmental laws that are not as harsh as the ones we have in our countries, we lose a lot of jobs. Other than that the working conditions in these countries are often very bad, and the workers only get minimum wage.
Then there is the fact that the more we globalize the more the countries will look like eachother. No matter what country you are in you will eat at the same restaurants and buy the same brands of clothes. And that would be a shame. If you ask me I would say tht one of the greatest things we have in this world is the diversity. The possibility to discover new things in every country. Without that diversity, there would be no reason to leave your own country.
Simon
I can tell that tell that globalization has a very firm grasp on our world today, where ever you go, its there. I generally that globalization is a good thing. It makes a lot of cultures dissolve and mix together to create a universal from all across the globe. it connects us but also pulls us apart, certain cultures are not as closely knit together as they used to be because globalization is getting in the way of certain aspects that used to be very important to that culture.
ReplyDeleteI believe that globalization is a good thing and offers people a lot more opportunities. when I think about all of my favourite band I realize that majority of them are from Europe and very few are from North America. When I go to university I want to go to a different country to study and learn different cultures and ways of life, and globalization makes that a whole lot easier for me to do. Some people believe that we need to stop globalization in order to preserve culture, I agree that you should keep and stay apart of the culture and life that you were born and raised in but I do not feel that we need to stop globalization, some people feel that their culture should universal and that they want to see the world and adapt new customs, and it is up to them to decide what they want to do with them selfs.

The introduction you wrote summarized the pros and cons of globalization really well. I absolutely agree with your belief that globalization does offer people many opportunities and that we should not stop globalization. I also liked the examples you used to support why globalization is good.
DeleteFrom my perspective, globalization has mainly positive effects on cultures. Yes, it does sometimes emerge completely different worldviews/ values together and during that process one worldview/ value may be less apparent. Some people have also said that globalization can be very overwhelming, with ever growing amount of technology. However, all these cons mostly end up benefitting the world in the end. By applying the first point which is meant to encourage people to be more open-minded and tolerant of differences. For example in Calgary we have many cultural festivities- such as the Calgary Turkish Festival, Dragon boat race and the Stampede- throughout the year to give everyone a chance to experience and celebrate different cultures. As the latter point is only to keep helping us adjust to different to an always evolving globe. It also improves the efficiency in our lives, like Google. It is always creating new programs like Google chat and Google hangout to help people connect face to face around the world. Thus the effects of globalization on cultures are mainly positive in the long run, building a sturdy network connecting societies and bringing peace.
ReplyDelete-Cynthia
Globalization effects my and all of our culture too a very large extent. usually this is the result of people from all over the world coming together to share their different background. This is something that we see a lot in Canada because we are a multi-cultural country. When we meet these people and we share our different cultural backgrounds from the past it brings us to the attention of a closer understanding of the world around us.
ReplyDeleteAn example of this is is if i saw somebody who came from a different country who was going through things like war, poverty, persecution, or even national disasters. By sharing this information about their culture, I might decide to live the rest of my life trying to help those people in those countries. This would be a huge extent that my local cultural could change my life.
